Individual Psychotherapy – Shireen Gaur

INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

I offer weekly individual psychotherapy in my consulting rooms in south Manchester. My expertise is in psychodynamic psychotherapy and group analytic psychotherapy. However,  I tailor and adapt a variety of approaches in my work, in keeping with every client’s unique difficulties and needs.

How I work in psychotherapy:

Understanding the experiences that lie beneath pain and distress:

I believe that most problems are related to difficult experiences, especially within the significant relationships of our early years. In my experience as a psychotherapist, I have found that working on these underlying issues is the most helpful way of addressing them.

Becoming aware of what is causing our distress:

Some experiences, thoughts and feelings, particularly if they are painful and distressing, can remain unacknowledged and unprocessed in our minds. These can then express themselves in symptoms of anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder etc. or even in a sense of deep unease within ourselves and in our relationships with others.

Through psychotherapy, I can help you to gently explore and understand these thoughts and feelings that are consciously and unconsciously experienced, and to integrate this awareness into the other aspects of your life.

Many people have described this process of increased awareness as freeing up and liberating, offering them a greater sense of understanding, acceptance and control in different aspects of their lives.

Developing coping strategies: :

Understanding what lies beneath the pain and distress will help us to together recognise its meaning in relation to your current distress.

In psychotherapy, every experience and relationship in your life matters, including the one between you and your psychotherapist. This exploration and understanding can be a highly effective way of alleviating the painful feelings that have so far remained unrecognised.

The sense of clarity and meaning that comes from psychotherapy can also lead to a better sense of one’s self and identity, and through that help you to meet the challenges you may experience with more flexibility, creativity and confidence.

The process of psychotherapy is often not easy or comfortable, but the guidance and support of an experienced psychotherapist can help you to make changes that are more meaningful and enduring.
